Most free PDF sites upload your document to a server, keep a copy for a few hours and stamp a watermark on the file they give back. NeedTools is built the other way round. Editing, merging, splitting, rotating, page numbering and image conversion all run inside your browser tab using WebAssembly, so a contract, a payslip or a passport scan never leaves your machine. You can watch it yourself: open the network tab, drop a file, and you will see no upload request.
A small number of jobs genuinely cannot run in a browser — OCR on a scanned page, Word and Excel conversion, and heavy image-based compression need real document engines. Those tools call our own processing service, the file is converted in memory and deleted the moment the response is streamed back to you. We tell you on the tool page which of the two paths you are on, so you always know where your document is.
